Fully Funded with Enhanced Stipend: Ultimate Imaging
This is an opportunity to make a key contribution to one of the most advanced imaging technologies currently being developed for ultra-high resolution imaging using X-rays and electrons. One aim of the project will be to obtain the highest resolution images of atoms ever achieved in the world using transmission electron microscopy. The method (called âptychographyâ in the scientific literature) makes images without using good-quality lenses, but instead processes diffraction patterns. By no longer needing good lenses, which are very hard to make at sub-atomic wavelengths, ptychography has revolutionised X-ray microscopy: this project aims to make similar transformational paradigm change in electron imaging. The studentship is sponsored by Phase Focus Ltd (http://youtu.be/d9PCNneu3EU), a spin-out of the University of Sheffield.
The studentship will cover full PhD tuition fees and a tax free stipend for three and a half years (£16,545 for the 2013-14 academic year, which is enhanced by £1,545 above the standard rate), and fees for UK/EU students.
There may be an opportunity to have a partial fee-waiver awarded for a very well qualified non-EU candidate.
The studentship can start at the earliest opportunity after the closing date.
Requirements:
