PhD Opportunities in Microengineering by Liquid Manipulation

Reference: NM02073

Closing date: 03 December 2013

Applications are invited for PhD candidates in the fields of liquid micro-engineering and self-organisation for manufacturing applications at the Institute for Manufacturing, part of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. The IfM is a world-class research centre where leading-edge science and engineering applied to key issues in modern manufacturing.

PhD opportunities are focused on both experimental and theoretical analysis of some of the following areas:

  • Creation of novel micro and nanostructures by liquid engineering
  • Integration of multiple techniques for micrometre-scale fluid manipulation
  • Understanding and manipulation of microdrops, jets and liquid-liquid interfaces
  • Fluid flow in microfluidic structures including porous and fibrous materials
  • Scalable experimental design for novel manufacturing techniques

Specific potential applications of this work are in:

  • Industrial applications of inkjet printing
  • Biological scaffold production for tissue engineering
  • Manufacture of novel drug delivery techniques
  • Novel label-free and optical label biosensing devices

The successful applicant will have, or expect to obtain, a first class honours degree or equivalent in an experimental science (including chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, applied physics), engineering or a related field. They will also have a rigorous and thorough approach to problem solving, an ability to implement imaginative solutions to  experimental design and an enthusiastic, passionate interest in multiple areas of science and engineering.

Funding in the form of scholarships or grants may be available for highly qualified students. The closing date for some sources of funding is 3 December 2013, so early enquiries are encouraged.

Interested applicants are invited to send their curriculum vitae and a brief summary of their research interests in this area to Dr. Ronan Daly (rd439@cam.ac.uk) or Professor Ian Hutchings (imh2@cam.ac.uk).

Further information on the Institute for Manufacturing and the application process are available on the IfM website: http://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/education/phd

Applications should be made on-line via the Cambridge Graduate Admissions Office before the deadline:
