PhD opportunities in Technology & Innovation Management

Applications are invited for PhD candidates in the field of technology and innovation management at the Institute for Manufacturing, part of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.  The IfM is a world-class research centre addressing some of the key issues in modern manufacturing and working extensively with industry.  

The Centre for Technology Management researches processes and practices for identifying, selecting, acquiring, exploiting and protecting technology for business benefit (www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/research/ctm).

Research areas of current interest for prospective PhD students within the centre include:

  • Technology enterprise: the origins, start-up and growth of technology-based ventures and their impact upon the economy, including open innovation, university-industry collaborations, and investment and incubation for emerging technologies
  • Strategic technology management: management processes and tools for technology planning, understanding technology trends and breakthroughs, sourcing technologies and assessing their value to the business
  • Innovation management: management processes, frameworks and tools for supporting innovation in technology-intensive firms, including new technology, process, product and service development, including the front-end of the innovation process and early-stage technological development

The successful applicant will have at least a 1st or 2.1 class degree or equivalent.

Funding in the form of University scholarships or grants may be available for highly qualified students. The closing date for some sources of funding is 3 December 2013, so early enquiries are encouraged.
