PhD Supervisor: Dr Jiabin Jia
Application Deadline: 30/09/2013
Funding Availability: Open to UK/EU/Overseas applicants. Studentships will cover University fees (at UK/EU or overseas rate), plus a stipend for 3.5 years at the enhanced EPSRC rate (£14,640 for 2013/14).Â
Research Area: Digital CommunicationsÂ
Project description:
Compared with X-ray, CT and MRI, Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a low-cost, compact and high-speed technique for medical imaging. However, the relatively poor spatial resolution of EIT limits its widespread clinical applications. This research project aims to develop an advanced digital EIT system for medical applications. Efforts will be made to improve the resolution of the reconstructed images by using advanced technologies and algorithms. It is expected the system will still be able to achieve excellent temporal resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The system will not only display 2D and 3D images of the static objects (e.g. breast and stomach) to diagnose the abnormality, but also will monitor the real-time dynamic response of brain, lungs and heart to clinical treatment or external stimulus. Therefore, this EIT system could become a powerful tool to disclose the mysteries of human body.Â
Eligibility and qualifications:
Enthusiastic and self-motivated candidates are sought with a background in electrical and electronic engineering or related discipline. A good knowledge of electronic and hardware design, instrumentation and software development is essential. Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit: a first class or upper second class honours undergraduate degree (or International equivalent) is the minimum qualification requirement.Â
