PhD Supervisor: Dr. Jacob Chakareski
Application Deadline: 31/10/2013
Funding Availability: Open to UK/EU/Overseas applicants. Studentships will cover University fees (at UK/EU or overseas rate), plus a stipend for 3.5 years at the enhanced EPSRC rate (£14,640 for 2013/14).Â
Research Area: Digital CommunicationsÂ
We will investigate efficient communication methods for capturing and delivering visual signals captured by an array of spatially collocated cameras. The project is motivated by the growing popularity of multi-camera systems that record a 3D scene of interest from multiple perspectives. Applications range from entertainment, remote monitoring, telepresence, etc. We will develop optimization methods that will account for the spatial and temporal correlation of the camera signals in order to maximize the operational efficiencies of the acquisition and delivery processes. Our investigations will also account for the context under which such content is captured and consumed, for instance, the correlation between the spatiotemporal mobility patterns of the clients and between their interactivity patterns with the visual signals. Our aim will be to derive the ultimate performance limits of multi-view-camera systems and develop practical algorithms that can be deployed in such environments, as well.
Eligibility and qualifications:
Enthusiastic and self-motivated candidates are sought with a solid background in mathematics and electronic engineering. In particular, good knowledge of fundamentals of signal processing and data networking will be essential. Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit: a first class or upper second class honours undergraduate degree (or International equivalent) is the minimum qualification requirement.
