The Faculty of Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is an organization with over 300 employees and 3.000 students. The faculty offers various courses in Dutch Law, Notarial Law and Criminology.
The Faculty has a vacancy for a 3-year PhD-project on the interaction between national and international criminal law in the field of substantive international criminal law. The project aims to conduct systematic and comparative research into international criminal law as applied by national courts and into liability theories developed by international courts with the ultimate purpose of drawing up (i) guidelines that can inform national judges to what extent they need to adopt an âinternationalist approachâ when adjudicating international crimes and (ii) to contribute towards the development of a body of âharmonizedâ substantive international criminal law. The research will be part of the project âDealing with Divergence â national adjudication of international crimes. âThis project is funded by a VIDI research award from the Netherlands Scientific Organisation, the NWO.
Tasks
The candidates will be required to engage in research leading to publications in academic journals and a PhD degree.
Requirements
The candidates should have a degree in law, preferably in international criminal law by way of a masters degree/LL.M. The candidatesâ academic record should evidence research ability and interest in comparative criminal law.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Criminal Law within the department of Criminal Law & Criminology of the Faculty of Law. The initial appointment will be for a period of 12 months. After satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment it will be extended for a total duration of 3 years. Salary
The gross monthly salary is ⬠2.427,- per month in the first year up to ⬠2.664,- gross per month in the third year (salary scale 85), based on a full-time employment.
