PhD Research Studentship Sport biomechanics and strength and conditioning

(full-time)

Package: Four-year bursary of £13,726 per annum (2013/2014 rate) plus tuition fees (at EU/UK rate)

Start date: As soon as possible in agreement with the supervisory team

Supervisory Team: Professor Gareth Irwin, Dr Tim Exell, and Dr Cassie Wilson (University of Bath)

Summary:

Based on the principles of training and underpinned by the biomechanics of human movement this research programme will examine similarities between key resistance exercises and specific sporting events. With athletes training near physiological maximum identifying the most effective and efficient pathways of skill development and performance enhancement is desirable. Identifying the biomechanical similarities between these skills will be achieved through an examination of the fundamental kinematics and kinetics of the movements involved. A map of the strength and conditioning routes from ‘general’ to ‘specific’ lifting variations to individual sporting disciplines will be a primary objective. A detailed research proposal will be developed that ensures maximum impact in the area as well as producing high quality scientifically grounded research. The impact of this research will be seen through the enhancement of the organisation of training and exercise selection in relation to athlete long-term development and optimal exercise selection for specific sporting disciplines.

The aim of this research project is to develop understanding of the athlete and sport specific biomechanics of physical preparation in elite athletes. The overall purpose of the research is to gain an insight into the key biomechanical indicators that may be used to develop athlete-centred training programmes in order to improve performance.

Partner Organisations:

Sport Wales - the partner organisation (grant funded), is a nationwide network of support centres designed to foster the talents of elite athletes to increase the potential for medal winning success. Working hand-in-hand with elite performers, coaches and performance directors, their sports science and sports medicine specialists offer cutting-edge assistance to help athletes gain the extra edge.

Host Organisation:

The Sports Biomechanics Research Group is based in the National Indoor Athletics Centre, within the Cardiff School of Sport. Currently there are 13 members of the group, including academic and research staff, research students and a specialist technician. Our research focuses on understanding and improving sports performance and reducing injury within a sporting context.

Application:

Applicants should have either a good honours (at least a 2:1 classification) undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science or a related area, and potentially an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science (with a specialism in biomechanics). The applicant should be able to demonstrate the necessary experience or potential to successfully complete a higher degree by research.  Prior experience within the sport of athletics is desirable.

  • As part of the PhD the student will assist in the delivery and development of technical support for the Sport Wales strength and conditioning department
