Faculty of Engineering
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Power Electronics, Machines and Drives Group, which is internationally renowned for research in electrical machines, power conversion, aerospace electrical power systems, power device and packaging technologies, ac drives and energy systems.Â
The aim of the projects is to look at ways of improving power density of electrical machines and power electronics by exploring closer machine-power converter integration, high speed/high frequency machine design and drive control methodologies. Power density is one of the major challenging requirements for more electric transport including the more electric aircraft and hybrid and electric vehicles. The projects will benefit from close links to major international industrial partners and will have elements of modelling and design as well as experimental build and test.
PhD studentships are available in the following areas:
A) Power Electronics Integration
B) Electrical Machine Modelling and Design
C) Electrical Motor Drive Control Â
Requirements
All students should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree or a distinction or high merit at MSc level in engineering. Students may have electrical, electronic, mechanical or material science background. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are essential.
Experience with software tools such as Matlab and FEA, C and any practical/industrial experience related to the proposed topics will be beneficial.
The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees for UK/EU students, due to funding restrictions. A tax free stipend for three years of up to £18,000 per annum.
