The School of Metallurgy and Materials is seeking three high calibre candidates for fully funded PhD studentships in materials modelling.
The PhDs are sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc and will be supervised at the PRISM2 modelling group within the School of Metallurgy and Materials. PRISM2 is a research centre, at the University of Birmingham, with expertise in the modelling of materials, manufacturing and design for high technology applications in the aerospace and power generation sectors.
The projects will focus on developing state-of-the-art modelling capabilities to simulate the microstructure evolution and mechanical response of the next generation of high temperature nickel-based superalloys during both manufacture and for in service conditions. The approach will be to couple the deformation behaviour to the microstructure. The three research projects will cover the following areas:Â
The candidate should have a strong Undergraduate or Masters degree, in materials science, mechanical engineering, physics or another relevant discipline. A strong solid mechanics background and programming skills are important while strong mathematical skills are essential. The successful candidates will have the chance to work in one of the UK's leading materials and process modelling centres as well as interacting with industry on developments in the application of advanced modelling methods.Â
