PhD Scholarship Employment and Welfare in Disadvantaged Neighbourhoods

This PhD Scholarship is funded by Bristol City Council. The aim of the scholarship is to support an innovative research project that builds upon the interdisciplinary nature of our economics subject cluster and which seeks to identify and recommend real world policy to improve the employability and welfare of individuals living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

We will consider project proposals from applicants who can set out convincing arguments for lines of research in this complex area. Topics covered in a proposal could include, but are not limited to: Job creation; Education/skills; Health; Accessibility; Social isolation; Attitudes to work; Area scarring; Low pay/minimum wage/living wage; Poverty.

The proposals should have a theoretical grounding and offer a realistic and achievable applied approach. Please limit your proposal to 2,000 words (plus references) and have the following structure: i) Introduction; ii) Theory; iii) Methods; iv) Data; v) Summary; vi) References.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who can think creatively about meeting the needs of people living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and can show their ability to carry out a research programme to PhD standards.

Applicants should have a good postgraduate degree ideally in economics or a related business subject (HRM, psychology, planning, etc.). Candidates should also be able to provide evidence of strong abilities in either quantitative or qualitative research skills, or both.

The scholarship is available from 1 October 2013 and consists of an annual stipend of £13,760, subject to satisfactory progress, for three years. In addition, full-time tuition fees will be covered for three years (Home/EU rates only). Overseas applicants will be required to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £7,565 per annum).
