Project overview: Unintentional injuries are a significant contributor to the burden of death and disability of children and young people, with the greatest impact on those living in low and middle income countries. Road injury, drowning, fire and falls remain in the top 30 causes of Years of Life Lost in 2010.
Guidance on developing policies to prevent injuries specify the need to collect data on risk factors for injury and to use that information to develop interventions as part of the first steps towards developing policies for injury prevention at a regional or national level. Calls for high quality data to underpin the development of interventions and policy have been raised for burns, road traffic injuries and drowning. Community-based environmental change interventions are one approach that has been effective.
This PhD scholarship is to provide the opportunity for a motivated and capable student to generate new knowledge to inform future interventions to prevent child injury in a country of their choice.
Applicants must have a completed a Masters level qualification or equivalent in public health, preferably in relation to children and young people; experience of data collection in the field in a low or middle income country; proficiency in verbal and written English, and basic computer skills.
