The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark, DTU Wind Energy, is seeking a PhD student for the Aeroelastic Design Section (AED). Our competences are aero-servo-elasticity (coupling between structural dynamics, aerodynamics and control), aerodynamics, CFD and aero acoustics (engineering models for turbulent inflow and trailing edge noise). We focus on the development of models for the design, analysis and improvement of wind turbines and the validation of these models in full scale tests or wind tunnel experiments.
Responsibilities and tasksÂ
The general scope of the PhD project is to develop methods and tools for design of light weight rotors by considering both passive build-in and active controls.
The PhD project consists of 3 parts:
First, the benefits and the limitations of two different passive control methodologies, structural (e.g. bend-twist or bend-bend coupling) and geometrical (e.g. swept blade), are investigated. The aim of this investigation is to understand each passive control mechanisms and quantify its benefits and limitations in order to optimize control effects.Â
Second, the synergistic combination of adaptive characteristics from passive and active control, pitch control and trailing edge flap control is investigated.Â
Third, an optimized design tool for large offshore wind turbine blades is developed by adapting combinations of the passive and active control methods.Â
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
Approval and EnrolmentÂ
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
