PhD scholarship in Quantitative Sociology, Social Policy or Criminology

We are delighted to announce this exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative research and teaching initiative in School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR), one of the largest and highest ranked centres for social science in the UK.

The successful candidate will undertake research in any area of quantitative sociology, social policy, or criminology. Your time will mostly be dedicated to your PhD as part of our commitment to enhancing quantitative research through a new Faculty-wide network and a joint initiative with UEA and the University of Essex. Alongside this, you would do a limited amount of teaching within the Kent Q-Step Centre – a £2m initiative to transform undergraduate quantitative methods skills, which at Kent involves a number of exciting innovations on the cutting-edge of quantitative teaching.

Our School has a world-wide reputation for excellence. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, we were ranked joint third with 70% of our research being evaluated as either ‘World Leading’ or of ‘International excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigor.’ We are a member of the South East Doctoral Training Centre (SEDTC) which awards scholarships funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and the School has been awarded European Union Erasmus Mundus funding for a Doctorate in Cultural and Global Criminology (DCGC). The School offers an unrivalled European context in which to study for a PhD in the social sciences.

The scholarship covers tuition fees at the postgraduate standard home/EU rate (£3,900) in addition to an annual maintenance stipend of £13,726 per annum. Visit our website for more details or contact Ben Baumberg for an informal discussion.

Deadline for applications: 16.00, Friday 31 January 2014
Interviews held: Thursday 13 February 2014 at our Canterbury campus
