The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight
The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF) is offering a PhD scholarship to start in the academic year 2013-14. The term of the scholarships is three years. Successful candidates will be expected to make a contribution to activities in the Centre in return for a fee-waiver and a maintenance allowance of £13,726 per annum.
The Centre, funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), was established between Heriot-Watt University and the University of Cambridge. SRF brings together two strong research teams to examine the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability in the road freight transport sector. The Centre combines expertise in logistics, vehicle engineering, human factors, energy economics, and sustainability. SRF will work in partnership with a consortium of companies from the road freight industry. These industry partners will help to set the research agenda and trial the adoption of equipment, systems and procedures emerging from the research.
The successful candidate is expected to investigate the opportunities for reconfiguring logistical networks in order to reduce the road freight intensity of the UK economy. He or she will develop a model to predict the effects of network redesign, that companies can undertake individually and in collaboration, in order to reduce the demand for road freight transport.
We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates to develop the projects outlined below. Preference will be given to applicants with a good Masters level qualification in a related discipline, although in exceptional circumstances we may consider students with only an undergraduate degree in a relevant area.
