The scholarship is to the value of £18,000 (to cover PhD tuition fees and maintenance) for each of three years, beginning January 2014.
Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships in the School of Law at the University of Manchester. The scholarships are funded by the European Research Council, and they are linked to the research project âA Sociology of the Transnational Constitutionâ, led by Professor Chris Thornhill.
The successful candidates will contribute to the research project as PhD students, writing a doctoral thesis that will investigate the impact of international norms on patterns of constitutional organization and institution building in one political system. In particular, they will assess how the assimilation of international law in national constitutional and judicial politics has shaped domestic political institutions and affected the interactions between these institutions and other parts of society. Candidates for the posts are invited independently to select a polity as a case study for their own research. However, students with a particular interest in the constitutional law of transitional polities â for example, in Latin America or North Africa â are particularly encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates will be committed to cross-disciplinary research on constitutionalism, will engage in collaborative research with other project members on the sociological origins and impact of constitutional changes, and will need to be prepared to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
