PhD Student Scholarship - Science and Engineering

3 years, fixed term, full-time

Annual stipend ($31,000 tuition fees + $25,000 living allowance)

Be part of a world-leading research team focusing on CO2 multi-phase flow behaviour in rock studies and carbon geo-sequestration.

As one of several 3-year PhD recipients you will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Stefan Iglauer a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and leader of the Multi-Phase Flow through Porous Media group. Dr. Iglauer is establishing a world-leading group focusing on CO₂ flow behaviour in rock at reservoir conditions with emphasis on the range nano-scale to core-scale (centimetre scale).

As part of the team you will work on multi-phase flow through rock topics related to carbon geo-sequestration, and with particular emphasis on investigating the behavior of supercritical CO₂ (and brine) multi-phase flow and spreading in sandstone storage rock.

The group is directly connected to two major research programs:

The Australian National Geo-sequestration Laboratory (NGL), in which several new labs have and will be built to promote us to a world-leading authority in this research area.
The industrial South-West Hub geo-sequestration project, which is located at Harvey, where it is planned to inject 6.5 million tons of CO₂ per year starting in the year 2015. Total investment into this project will be $1 billion if all stage gates are successful. The candidates will also be involved in a second Australian project of this type, the CarbonNet geo-sequestration project in the state of Victoria.Â

It is essential you have completed a relevant Master-degree and can demonstrate a sound background in Petroleum/Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Physics or Chemistry.Â
