PhD Studentship: Active Structural Acoustic Control Using Modal Sensors and Actuators

Our ref: ISVR- SPCG- 35
This is an EPSRC/BAE Systems Industrial CASE PhD Studentship in Active Control with Enhanced Stipend.

Candidates are sought for a PhD programme on active control of sound at the renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton (www.isvr.soton.ac.uk). The CASE studentship is available from October 2012, is fully funded and benefits from an enhanced stipend and industrial supervision provided by BAE Systems Maritime.

Noise that is radiated from vibrating structures and panels creates problems in a variety of industrial sectors, particularly, automotive, aerospace and maritime. This new research programme will draw upon earlier fundamental work in active structural acoustic control at the ISVR to develop a functional/smart material approach for the suppression of such radiated noise.

Candidates should have as a minimum a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Physics or Mathematics and ideally a good knowledge of Signal Processing and Control theory and application.

Information on the application process is available by clicking the APPLY button below.

Please also send a CV to the academic supervisor, Professor Steve Daley - s.daley@soton.ac.uk. If you would like to discuss the opportunity further or obtain more details of the programme please contact Professor Daley directly via email or phone 023 8059 3043.

Funding Notes: A tax-free bursary between £18,000 and £20,000 per year for 3 years is available to UK students, plus University tuition fees paid and travel expenses paid to attend appropriate international conferences and seminars. There may also be Post-doctoral opportunities either at the University or the Company following completion of the project subject to performance. Starting date is flexible (ideally before Nov 2012).

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Steve Daley ISVR, Email: s.daley@soton.ac.uk, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 3043
