PhD Studentship An Exploration of Short-Term Memory Representations of Magnitude in Humans

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the Research Centre for Brain and Behaviour, LJMU, under the supervision of Dr Ruth Ogden, Dr Catharine Montgomery and Prof Steve Fairclough. The aim of the PhD project is to investigate how magnitude (e.g. duration, area and physical length) is represented in short-term memory. The project will examine the role of executive functions in memory for magnitude and whether representations of different dimensions of magnitude interfere with one another in short-term memory. Behavioural and neuroimaging (fNIRS and EEG) techniques will be used to explore whether different dimensions of magnitude share a common memory coding system.

The successful candidate will have a good degree (2:1) in psychology or a related discipline. They should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience using fNIRS, EEG or programming in E-prime is desirable. The studentship will carry a stipend of £13,750. Funding is available from 30th September 2013 for 3 years. Due to funding, the successful candidate must be eligible for fees at UK/EU rates.

Candidates should complete a Postgraduate application form available from the LJMU website (http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/RGSO/100087.htm). Within the application form you are asked to indicate your research experience.  In this section please briefly explain why this area of research interests you (approximately 500 words). Please note that you do not need to write a research proposal for this project. Please utilise the personal statement section of the form to explain why you are suitable for this position.

We anticipate that interviews for this post will be held during the week commencing 9th September 2013

Informal enquires can be made to Dr Ruth Ogden r.s.ogden@ljmu.ac.uk
