This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship Laser and Photonics Engineering Group at the School of Engineering, University of Lincoln, in laser surface treatment of biomaterials for the manipulation of stem cell response. The PhD project aims to develop techniques to predict and modulate stem cell growth through the determination of laser-modified surface parameters such as surface roughness, surface chemistry and the wettability characteristics. By modelling the stem cell responses with the laser-modified surface parameters a procedure will be established to predict stem cell proliferation, cell count and differentiation. This will be analysed alongside results for other cell lines such as osteoblast cells, fibroblast cells and neuroblast cells to identify generic parameters which can be used to predict and manipulate biological cell growth on polymeric surfaces.
The candidates should have an honours degree (minimum 2.1) or a Master's degree in engineering or a physical science, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good laboratory and cross-disciplinary skills are also required.
The three year studentship will cover student fees (up to the value of UK fees) and give a tax-free stipend of £10,000 per annum, and is available to candidates of all nationalities. There are further opportunities within the School for the successful candidate to supplement the tax-free stipend.
