A PhD studentship is available for a high calibre candidate to join a research team engaged in the development of modelling applications relevant to hydrogen safety. The Ph.D. student will join an established group investigating hydrogen safety. The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University has outstanding research facilities for thermo-fluids, IC engines, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and combustion modelling. The group is engaged in numerous CFD activities and widely known for their contributions in numerical and modelling research applied to IC engine modelling, combustion modelling, explosion modelling, radiation and LES applications. This project is supported by EPSRC Supergen programme and the Ph.D. student is expected to develop modelling techniques to predict hydrogen explosions and fires using RANS and LES techniques.                           Â
The candidates must be expecting, or have already obtained a first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, physics or other relevant subject. Good communication skills are essential and an interest in, and basic understanding of computational fluid dynamics is desirable.
The proposed starting date is 1st January 2014. Due to funding restrictions this three-year studentship is generally open to UK/EU students but applications from exceptionally talented overseas candidates will also be considered. The studentship will provide a maximum stipend of £13,726 per annum tax free (the exact amount depends on the fee status and experience) and UK/EU candidates would not be required to pay any tuition fees.
After the closing date for applications, the most promising candidates will be invited to demonstrate their communication skills by giving a short 15 minute presentation (web based or in person) on an interesting project they have previously been involved in which will be followed by a short interview.
Please apply through the Apply link below. Applicants seeking additional information are invited to contact Professor W. Malalasekera (e-mail W.Malalasekera@lboro.ac.uk).
Please quote the reference WM081013 on all correspondence and especially on the application form.
The closing date for applications for this studentship is November 8th 2013.
