This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship at the School of Engineering, University of Lincoln, in micro surface feature array machining for the control of fluid flow drag along engineering surfaces. The PhD project aims to develop techniques to predict and modulate the drag profile of a fluid passing over a defined surface by the application of micro-features machined across the surface using laser machining technology. The drag performance of micro-features is to be modelled and predicted using computational techniques. The predicted performance will be verified via empirical testing of laser machined samples using flow pressure differentiation and force measurands. The technique will be applied to common engineering polymeric and metallic materials for application in high performance flow sensitive situations.
The candidates should have an honours degree (minimum 2.1) or a Master's degree in engineering or a physical science, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good laboratory and cross-disciplinary skills are also required.
The three year studentship will cover student fees (up to the value of UK fees) and give a tax-free stipend of £10,000 per annum, and is available to candidates of all nationalities. There are further opportunities within the School for the successful candidate to supplement the tax-free stipend.
Informal enquiries can be made by e-mail to Dr. C.F. Dowding via : cdowding@lincoln.ac.uk
