PhD Studentship: Closed loop optimisation for sustainable chemical manufacture

A fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship is available for students who qualify for Home fees (http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/students/studentregistry/fees/costs/status.html) due to funding regulations.

The studentship is available to work on a highly innovative project in the area of Green Chemistry / Green Engineering. This project is addressing the key challenge of the Dial-a-Molecule EPSRC Grand Challenge Network: how to manufacture new chemical species rapidly and sustainably!  The project is in the area of advanced manufacturing, which has recently seen a substantial increase in funding from UK Government.

The key research challenge for this project is to develop the fast auto-optimisation of a wide range of synthetic processes against a variety of requirements, including greenness. The project will work with new chemical experimental hardware, advanced analytical methods, real time optimisation algorithms.

Specific topic of a PhD will be agreed around research interests of a successful candidate, with the project described above outlining an overall area. The student will be part of a team of three young researchers working on this project in the group of Alexei Lapkin, Professor of Sustainable Reaction Engineering (http://www.ceb.cam.ac.uk/people.php?action=view&id=1450), a part of the whole group of Sustainable Reaction Engineering at Cambridge, and a part of the Dial-a-Molecule consortium, involving researchers from Universities of Southampton, Cardiff and Strathclyde, and our industrial partners: GSK, Syngenta and Cyclofluidics.

Eligibility:

  • Due to funding regulations this studentship is only open to students who met the criteria for Home fees
  • Applicants should have a First Class (or a high 2:1) degree in a relevant discipline, and will suit a candidate passionate about sustainable processes, reaction engineering, green chemistry.
  • If nominated for the studentship, the applicant will be expected to formally apply for admission as a graduate student with the University Admissions Office and satisfy any conditions of admission that they set forth.
