PhD Studentship Cultural History of Water in Central Asia

Two doctoral positions are available from February 2014 in a research team examining the cultural history of water in Central Asia. Projects enquiring into changing perceptions and uses of water will examine a wide range of materials, including archaeological, historical and ethnographic evidence. Work on water uses in nomadic and semi-nomadic areas, along the Naryn/Syr Darya or in the Issyk-Kul region is particularly encouraged, as are projects going beyond the study of irrigation. Doctoral students will be co-supervised by Dr. Jeanne Féaux de la Croix and a further professor in the relevant discipline.

The research team will be associated with the new Collaborative Research Center (CRC 1070) “ResourceCultures: Socio-cultural dynamics in the use of resources” – at the University of Tübingen. As a member of the Excellence Initiative, the University of Tübingen is one of Germany’s top-level research universities, with a broad spectrum of subjects based on a long tradition.

Your Profile
Applicants should have a Masters or equivalent degree in history, archaeology, anthropology or a closely-related discipline with expertise of Central Asia. Applicants should clearly link their research idea to the overall theme and be open to interdisciplinary work. We require a decent knowledge of English and willingness to learn German in the first year of the PhD. Demonstrating knowledge of the region, fieldwork or archival experience and relevant language skills will be beneficial.

Our Offer
The position is available for a period of three years. International students will receive a stipend of 1200€/month. Funds for start-up IT equipment, travel and research expenses are available.

Application
Applicants should submit a research proposal (max. 3 pages), CV and two letters of recommendation. All documents should be submitted electronically to the project leader Dr. Féaux de la Croix (jeannefeaux@zmo.de via the Apply button below) by 2nd December 2013. Informal enquiries are welcome. Please consult the CRC 1070 homepage for further information: http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/en/research/core-research/collaborative-research-centers/sfb-1070.html

The University of Tübingen strives to raise the number of women employed in research and teaching: we explicitly encourage suitably qualified female applicants. Applications from disabled candidates with equal qualifications will be treated with special consideration.

Please note that travel costs to the interview cannot be refunded.
