Project description
A PhD studentship is available to study the thermo and fluid dynamic behaviour of commercial stoves and to develop retrofits as well as an energy management system for the Nestle plant in Fawdon.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with engineers and food scientists from the industrial partner to investigate the stove performance, options of optimised designs and the integration of those improved devices into a new energy management concept for the site. These developed concepts will then be used as a blue print for other sites within the company.

During the project you will develop your knowledge and skills of energy auditing, production analysis, thermo and fluid dynamic measurement and analysis, product quality related to device performance etc., whilst working within a successful research team that will provide support and offer a warm environment during your research with a 1/3 of your time spent with the company.

Value of the award and eligibility
Due to the eligibility criteria, applications can only be received from UK/EU students that have resided in the UK for three years or more. A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £13,726.

Person specification
Applicants should have an upper-second or first-class degree or equivalent in mechanical or process engineering or relevant subject. Good knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics are prerequisites, a good understanding of simulations and equipment design is desirable.
