PhD Studentship Encouraging Healthy and Sustainable Travel in a University Setting

3 Year

Applications are invited for a full-time University studentship to support and work in the Department of Psychology.

Background The university has funding for a full-time University Research Studentship to enable an excellent candidate to work on travel psychology and behaviour. This will involve carrying out studies and interventions on the staff and students of the university. The overall aim is better to understand why people travel as they do, and how they might be helped to make more use of healthy and sustainable travel modes, particularly walking, bicycling and public transport.

The student will conduct their research under the primary supervision of Dr Ian Walker, and will be part of his transport and environmental psychology research group.

The Project Further details of the project can be found on the University website at the apply button below

The Successful Candidate should:

  1. Fulfil the entrance requirements for a Department for psychology MPhil/PhD (link to the MPhil/PhD Study page).
  2. Have at least a strong understanding of a relevant area of psychology such as transport psychology, social cognition, environmental psychology, etc., and associated research methods (including qualitative and statistical methodologies).

The Award The successful candidate will be supported for three 3 years, and will include a £13,726 (2013/14 rate) per annum stipend, Home/EU tuition fees and an annual Training Support Grant. Terms and conditions and details of other Awards can be found on the Graduate School website.

How to Apply Applicants should apply online to study for a full time MPhil/PhD in Psychology. It is important to quote the project title (see above) on your application.

Please note that the application form will refer to a formal proposal. As this studentship is to work on a specific project, there is no need to write a full formal proposal in this case. The application will also ask you to complete a funding request form. Use this to explain your experience and reasons for applying for this studentship and in particular give some ideas of the kinds of questions you would like to explore.

You must also apply specifically for this funding, including the need to complete the Funding Proforma in which you must outline your motivation for wanting to undertake research and a brief outline of your initial thoughts on the area of research (maximum 500 words).

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 12.00 noon (GMT), Thursday, 31st October 2013.

We would ideally like the successful candidate to begin work in January 2014.

Informal Enquiries  Should be addressed to Dr Ian Walker: i.walker@bath.ac.uk
