PhD Studentship EPR techniques

Supervisor: Dr A J Fielding

Anticipated start date for project: 16 September 2013

Closing date for applications: 30 August 2013

A fully funded studentship has become available in the School of Chemistry at The University of Manchester funded by Bruker UK Ltd.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual interested in an interdisciplinary PhD project in the laboratory of Dr Alistair Fielding based within the EPSRC National EPR Research Facility & Service.

The project aims at driving new applications and techniques in advanced EPR spectroscopy in the study of biomacromolecules. We solve structural, mechanistic and kinetic questions such as on flavins, cytochromes and phosphatases. This project will be particularly focussed on the conformational determination of substrate bound iron-sulfur clusters using cutting-edge EPR technology. The project involves the expression of proteins, carrying out pulsed EPR experiments, including spectrum simulations, as well as molecular dynamics calculations.

The EPSRC National EPR Research Facility & Service provides access to state-of-the-art experimental techniques for multi-frequency continuous wave and pulsed EPR spectroscopy, and associated methods, and data modelling. The project will have full access to EPR techniques under development as well as to existing instrumental technologies.

The studentship provides the exciting opportunity with working with Bruker in the development of new EPR techniques and applications. There is also the opportunity of spending time in Bruker’s labs in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Candidates should hold a good undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry or physics and are expected to provide the contact details of two scientific referees. Previous experience in one of: protein expression, magnetic resonance or numerical simulations is desirable.

Funded by Bruker UK Ltd and will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and a stipend of 13,726 per year. Funding is for 42 months.

Interested candidates should make enquiries to Dr A.J. Fielding (alistair.fielding@manchester.ac.uk).
