PhD Studentship EPSRC-DTC in Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and their Applications

Interdisciplinary Research Involving Departments of Chemistry & Aeronautical & Automotive Engineering. 

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship within the context of the existing Doctoral Training Centre in Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and their Applications.

A PhD which:

Lasts for four years

Has taught modules (120 credits) in the first three years in Science, Engineering, Energy, team building as well as Business, Economics and Management

Will conduct state-of-art research in a dynamic cross-disciplinary research culture where advanced chemical concepts/processes meet real world engineering challenges.

Opportunity to expose to world reputed industries in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell area

This project involves development, advanced characterisation and testing preferential oxidation (PROX) catalysts for Hydrogen purification. The prospective student will have the opportunity to work in the newly refurbished Energy Research Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Advanced research facilities in the Department of Aeronautical & Automotive Engineering interfacing this two strong research disciplines.

Applications are now accepted for this full-time studentship. The University has four official start dates 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October and the prospective student need to register on one of these dates. The studentship provides a stipend of £14,600 per annum, extendable up to £19,000 per annum depending on industrial support.  In addition student’s tuition fees are covered at the UK/EU rate for four years. Due to funding restrictions EPSRC conditions apply. 

Loughborough University boasts its own on-campus hydrogen vehicle refuelling station and its spin-off Fuel Cells company Intelligent Energy (http://www.intelligent-energy.com/)- which became one of the largest Fuel Cells companies in the UK. Also, the University is a part of UK’s the largest energy consortium, the Midlands Energy Consortium (MEC, http://www.midlandsenergyconsortium.org/) so successful candidates will enjoy working closely with other members of MEC, the University of Birmingham and University of Nottingham.
