Applications are invited for a PhD studentship as part of the project "Using a behavioural theory framework to design an intervention to improve implementation of the "Sepsis Six" at the Royal Free" (PIs Dr Sheldon Stone, the Royal Free Hospital and Prof Susan Michie, UCL). The studentship has received funding for the student stipend and London Weighting for two years (£15,600 year 1, £16,380 year 2) and for training (£1500 total over the two years), but fees will not be covered. Further funding will be sought to extend the funding of the studentship to a third year. Applicants should note that this cannot be guaranteed.

For further information contact: Professor Susan Michie s.michie@ucl.ac.uk or Dr Sheldon Stone (sheldon.stone@ucl.ac.uk).

To apply for the Studentship please email Linda Duffy (l.duffy@ucl.ac.uk) your CV (including the names of two referees), a cover letter (maximum 750 words) outlining your research interests, what you hope to achieve from the PhD and your research experience to date, and a detailed research proposal (to be based on the outline proposal) http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application. A transcript of your degree results would also be appreciated.

The selection process will also involve a face-to-face interview and may involve some skills assessment.

UCL’s Health Psychology Research Group (www.ucl.ac.uk/health-psychology/research-group) is led by Prof Susan Michie. Its focus is on designing and evaluating interventions to change behaviour, drawing on psychological evidence and theory. It has a strong multi-disciplinary and translational emphasis. It is linked with the British Psychological Society's Centre for Outcomes Research and Effectiveness and sits within the Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology which has a large research programme as well as postgraduate and professional training programmes. Health Psychology at UCL has close connections with Dr Stone’s research team at the Royal Free Campus at UCL, who have carried out several national studies on the effectiveness of infection control interventions in reducing healthcare associated infections. They are particularly interested in working with behavioural sciences to change healthcare workers behaviour, especially in implementing evidence based guidelines. There is excellent support for staff and students, with a variety of seminars, training and conference opportunities.

Person Specification & Eligibility: This studentship is open to those wishing to undertake a Postgraduate Research degree who have already completed appropriate research training (usually through obtaining a good Master’s degree in a relevant subject). Applicants should have a first or high upper 2nd class degree in psychology or a related discipline and ideally a Masters in one of those areas. They should be highly motivated, talented and curious individuals with a strong interest in health psychology. Overseas applicants are eligible to apply, but the cost of additional fees will need to be met by the successful candidate.
