PhD Studentship Harnessing Digital Spaces

The project

Governance and regulation is increasingly data-driven, and there is a need to democratise this process by enabling people to design, gather and reflect on data themselves. A three-year PhD scholarship is available for a suitable candidate to develop research in this area, working collaboratively with Knowle West Media Centre (http://www.kwmc.org.uk) and the University of Bristol. Questions to be asked include:

How can digital media support people to become more involved in decision making?

How do the systems produced by digital providers support community engagement?

Can digital data be used to generate new understandings of everyday life?

The successful candidates will be located within the Productive Margins research programme (www.productivemargins.ac.uk), an innovative new collaboration between communities in Bristol and South Wales and academics at the Universities of Bristol and Cardiff.

The studentship is for a +3 award, and will commence in October 2013. The candidates will be able to pursue their own doctoral research whilst working as part of the multi-disciplinary Productive Margins team.

For each studentship an outline project has been agreed as part of the initial bid. Applicants should submit a research proposal of no more than 1,000 words in response. The details for Harnessing Digital Spaces are as follows:
