Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of Turbulent Combustion, leading to the award of a PhD degree.  The post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate) provided by the EU Clean Sky project Dreamcode. Due to funding restrictions candidates should therefore fulfil the eligibility criteria for this Award.Â
The research involves the development of a methodology for modelling turbulent combustion with state of the art computational methods, including Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) for modelling of turbulent flow, and Stochastic Fields, Rate-Controlled Constrained Equilibrium (RCCE) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for the treatment of chemical kinetics and turbulence-chemistry interaction. In particular, Stochastic Fields is an approach for resolving the turbulence-chemistry interaction via the sub-grid scale Probability Density Function (PDF) formulation, RCCE is a general mathematical method for reducing complex reaction mechanisms, while ANN is a novel approach for the efficient integration of reaction mechanisms within CFD. The candidate will work with advanced codes developed within our group over a number of years and will interact with a group of experienced researchers working in this field.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College London.  You will have a background in Engineering or Science, strong analytical skills, an enquiring and rigorous approach to research and a keen interest in turbulence and combustion. Training will be provided in the modelling approaches involved and in programming techniques.  You will become a skilled communicator who is comfortable in an international situation. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.
