The UK is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% with respect to 1990 levels by 2050. Around 58% of our current emissions arise from the business, public and residential sectors; largely due to the provision of comfort and services in buildings. Around 80% of the stock of buildings that will exist in 2050, already exist today. If we are to achieve our GHG emission reduction targets, we need to transform the energy performance of our existing building stock.
To this end we are seeking to appoint an outstanding student to a PhD studentship on modelling firmsâ and homeownersâ energy-related investment decisions and the mechanisms for influencing these decisions. This work will closely complement the ePad research groupâs vibrant research programme in modelling the presence, activities and energy-related behaviours of building occupants.  With a background in economics, applied mathematics, engineering or a physical science you will have a passion for environmental research and the ability to work well within a team environment.Â
Students should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level in one of the disciplines (or a closely allied alternative) identified aboveÂ
The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees for UK/EU students and a tax free stipend for three years (£13,590 for the 2012-13 academic year),due to funding restrictions.Â
Informal enquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to: Professor Darren Robinson, Email: Darren.Robinson@nottingham.ac.uk. If you are interested in making an application, please contact Professor Darren Robinson directly, with a covering letter stating clearly how you fulfil the requirements of the studentship, and include a CV and the names and addresses of two academic referees.
