PhD Studentship in Life Cycle Analysis of Civil Infrastructure

Limit of Tenure: 3.5 years

An EPSRC funded Industrial Case Studentship Award is available for a suitably qualified candidate to conduct research leading to the award of a PhD degree in the field of Infrastructure Sustainability as part of jointly the Geotechnical Group (www-civ.eng.cam.ac.uk/geotech_new/geotech.htm) and the Centre for Sustainable Development (http://www-csd.eng.cam.ac.uk/), Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. The award is sponsored by Arup (www.arup.com) with whom the student will work closely to rigorously and systematically review the carbon arguments pertinent to Infrastructure. A previous PhD research by Lynsay Hughes (Effects of alignment on CO2 emissions from construction and use phases of highway infrastructure) opened up exciting new concepts and showed how infrastructure can be made low carbon. These concepts should extend to other infrastructure transport sectors, as well as energy, water and waste and their interdependencies. The research will seek to prove how whole life carbon concepts provide the way to reduce carbon and concentration on capital carbon alone misses the point for infrastructure.

Eligibility

The candidate should be qualified to at least first degree level with an upper second or first class honours degree in Engineering This Studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend at the EPSRC rate of £13,726 p.a. for 3.5 years, starting on 1st October 2013. Due to the nature of funding the studentship full funding is only available to UK citizens although EU students may be eligible for a fees-only award (no maintenance grant). For student eligibility criteria, please visit: http://wwwepsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx

The project will involve: review existing infrastructure carbon data; investigate links between capital and operational carbon and interdependencies; investigate carbon associated with ageing infrastructure being re-used and upgraded; case study infrastructure projects, Arup and external; link with UK and international infrastructure operators.
