The Materials Engineering Group at The Open University has an excellent, international reputation for the development and application of novel techniques for the measurement and analysis of residual stress. Professor John Bouchard launched a âContour Technology Research Programmeâ that resulted in creation of a world-leading Contour Measurement Facility at the OU laboratories in Milton Keynes and the group is the prime practitioner of the Contour Method in Europe, in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce, EDF, AREVA and TWI.
This PhD studentship is focused on advancing the Contour Method of residual stress measurement. The principle objectives of this research are to develop new cutting strategies and data analysis procedures for the Contour Method.
This full-time PhD position will suit a candidate with a qualification in mechanical engineering at Bachelorâs level or above, or equivalent qualification, experience of finite element modelling and programming in MATLAB as well as a good background in mathematics.
