Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of Solid Mechanics, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The post is industrially funded Mars Care & Treats Petcare Europe providing a bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate). Â
The aim of this proposal is to investigate the mechanics of functional âtreatsâ and âchewsâ for pets produced by Mars. These are nutritious treats for domestic dogs and cats which have the added functionality of removing plaque and tartar build up from petsâ teeth. As part of a continued effort to develop ever more effective products, Mars is interested to develop analytical and numerical mathematical models which can be used efficiently and quickly to determine the effect of various parameters on the mechanical response and hence cleaning efficiency of the treats. The model will be used to highlight how the treat deforms and fractures during âfirst biteâ which is a necessary step towards designing improved products.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College London. You will have a background in Engineering, Materials Science or a related field and an enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. Training will be given in theoretical and experimental Mechanics. You will become a skilled communicator, comfortable in an international situation. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.
