PhD Studentship in Numerical Modelling of Airflow,

Mixture Formation and Combustion in Low CO2 Spark-Ignition Engines

A fully funded PhD studentship is currently available at University College London (UCL) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://www.mecheng.ucl.ac.uk) for research study leading to the degree of PhD. The project is sponsored by the EPSRC and Jaguar Land Rover through and CASE award. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCL has an international reputation in the field of internal combustion engine research with state-of-the-art engine research labs and computing facilities. Jaguar Land Rover has established a new Centre of Excellence in Gasoline Engine Research at UCL and the PhD student will operate within this centre.

Description The research will make use of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to study engine flow and combustion processes. Validation of numerical simulations may also be required by conducting experiments with optical diagnostics in collaboration with other PhD students in the combustion and fuel systems test facility at UCL.

Key Requirements Candidates must have a 1st or 2:1 (or equivalent) degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and must be enthusiastic and well-motivated to carry out postgraduate research. Strong interest and/or previous exposure to engine-related research would be an advantage. Previous exposure to CFD with knowledge/interest in programming would be a key advantage; experience with experimental techniques is not critical.

Application Process The studentship is available immediately for a period of 3.5 years; it will meet University fees at UK/EU rate and provide a stipend of £15,000 per year (tax free). There are specific eligibility criteria for candidates wishing to apply for this award, therefore, please do not apply unless you meet the criteria outlined by EPSRC:

EPSRC Eligibility Prospective candidates need to submit an application for admission that can be downloaded from: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/admission/graduate-study/application-admission/

Candidates are also able to apply on-line.

The closing date is November 29, 2013.

Further Information For enquiries regarding the application and admission process you may contact Dr. William Suen, Graduate Tutor in Mechanical Engineering (k.suen@ucl.ac.uk) with copy to Ms. Charlotte Reisch (c.reisch@ucl.ac.uk).

For informal enquiries regarding the topic of the project, you may contact Dr. Pavlos Aleiferis (p.aleiferis@ucl.ac.uk).

The starting date will be fixed according to student availability but it is expected that the successful applicant will start by February 2014.
