Supervisor: Professor Fionn Dunne Duration: 36 months Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship jointly funded by Rolls-Royce and the Department of Materials. You should have a strong interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment, have a background in a relevant discipline (material science, engineering, or physics) and have an enquiring and rigorous approach to your work. There is an aspiration to predict a total component life to through wall leakage/failure that considers nucleation, short crack growth and LEFM where components are subject to thermal shock loading and hence steep through wall strain gradients. The EDF R5 procedure provides a means that is suitable for gas cooled high temperature reactors (AGR) with the additional complexity of creep and creep/fatigue interaction. The improved understanding of wetted environmental effects (PWR) in both fatigue and in revised crack growth laws that are rise-time dependent, suggests that a procedure similar to that in R5 is required that will integrate the nucleation, initiation and LEFM procedures for wetted environmental conditions. You will have an upper second or higher first degree or equivalent in materials or related discipline. This 3-year studentship will begin in October 2013. For those meeting the criterion of having been ordinarily resident in the UK for three years the studentship will cover fees at the home/EU rate plus the standard maintenance stipend of £15,726 per annum. Overseas candidates will be required to meet the difference between home and overseas tuition fee. Applications will be processed as received. How to apply The prospectus, entry requirements and application form is available available at: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus. This project will be supervised by Professor Fionn Dunne (fionn.dunne@imperial.ac.uk). For questions regarding the admissions process, please contact Fiona Thomson (fiona.thomson@imperial.ac.uk). Formal applications can be completed online (only after informal enquiries): at http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/materials. Closing date: 15 June 2013 Committed to equality and valuing diversity. We are also an Athena Silver SWAN Award winner, a Stonewall Diversity Champion and a Two Ticks Employer
