Candidates are invited to apply for a partial PhD studentship funded by a British Council UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) collaboration between the University of Kent, UK, and Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India.
Project description:
The aim of the project is to develop smart 60 GHz antennas for future Wi-Fi systems using modified printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication techniques. Smart, electronically steerable, antennas are usually formed using phased arrays which are complicated to design and require very accurate manufacturing processes, particular at 60 GHz. This project will look at using switched beam antennas using PCB fabrication techniques. The project is split into two parts: (1) An investigation into the feasibility of using modified PCB fabrication to form electromechanical microfabricated switches on printed circuit boards; (2) design broadband directional antennas that do not require strict tolerance levels and can be fabricated on PCB using conventional fabrication techniques.
The University of Kent is principally concern with part (1) of the project, with Cochin University working on part (2). As such, the successful candidate will be working mainly on the microfabricated switches. However, they will also be expected to do some antenna design and measurement, particularly during their exchange visit to Cochin.
Academic Requirements
Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a First Class or very good Upper Second Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering or a related subject. An appropriate degree at Masters level would be an advantage. Interest/experience in Antenna design and/or microfabrication is desirable.
Funding and Study
The successful candidate will join a co-tutelle joint degree programme between the School of Engineering and Digital Arts, University of Kent and Cochin University of Science and Technology. On successful completion of their studies the student will be awarded a PhD degree from both institutions. As part of the programme the candidate is expected to spend at least one year of their registration in Cochin University with the remainder of their registration spent at the University of Kent. The student will be given an allowance for tuition fees, travel, accommodation and living expenses for the one year period spent in India. Tuition and living expenses will NOT be covered for the time spent at the University of Kent. However, candidates may be eligible to apply for one of the schoolâs bursaries (http://www.eda.kent.ac.uk/postgraduate/projects_funding/funding_opportunities.aspx).
Commencement of Project
It is anticipated that the student will start their studies as soon as possible.
