This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship in the Laser and Photonics Engineering Group at the School of Engineering, University of Lincoln, to study mixed-state (or hybrid) wetting regimes using laser-modified surfaces.
Contact angle measurements and wettability analysis have found wide application as methods for determining the energetics of surfaces. Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel models provide a means to describe wetting regimes; however, there are instances when wetting does not subscribe to either model and this is curretly termed a mixed-state or hybrid wetting regime. There is still much to learn about such mixed-state wetting regimes. Within the Laser and Photonics Engineering Group there is considerable expertise in using laser radiation to produce precise features and patterns on the surfaces of a variety of materials to bring about changes in wettability, adhesional and bonding characteristics. This study will use lasers emitting at various wavelengths to generate features on the surfaces of polymers, ceramics and metals that encourage mixed-state wetting. Various techniques and methodologies will then be used to analyse the wetting regimes and establish the parameters and characteristics of the mixed-state wetting regime. Â
Candidates should have an honours degree (minimum 2.1) or a Master's degree in engineering, a physical science or mathematics and be able to demonstrate strong analytical skills. Knowledge of wettability and surface chemistry would be advantageous. Good laboratory and cross-disciplinary skills are also required.
The three year studentship will cover student fees (up to the value of UK fees) and give a tax-free stipend of £10,000 per annum, and is available to candidates of all nationalities. There are further opportunities within the School for the successful candidate to supplement the tax-free stipend.
