A PhD studentship is available for high calibre candidates to join a collaborative project between the University and Industry to develop an autonomous, ground-based system for the recognition and monitoring of clouds. The research topic focuses on developing new concepts, methods and algorithms to enable accurate and reliable ground-based cloud observations using an infra-red (IR) camera. Topics include:
Correction of detected temperature distribution due to angular dependent atmospheric properties
Improved classification techniques for cloud type in order to achieve an acceptable false positive rate over a wide range of clouds and prevailing weather conditions
Measurement of the fractional amount of whole-sky cover, due to the observed clouds, at a range of specified heights                         Â
The candidates must be expecting, or have already obtained a first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other relevant subject. Good communication skills are essential and an interest in, and understanding of basic meteorology and digital image processing would be an advantage.
The proposed starting dates are 1st October 2013 or 1st January 2014 depending on the availability of the successful applicants. The three-year studentship is expected to have a stipend of up to £15,000 per annum tax free (the exact amount will depend on experience) and candidates would not be required to pay any tuition fees if they are from within the EU.
After the closing date for applications, the most promising candidates will be invited to take part in informal interviews, if necessary by telephone.
Please apply through the Apply link below. Applicants seeking additional information are invited to contact Dr. David Kerr (e-mail D.Kerr@lboro.ac.uk).
