The successful applicant will be working in partnership with BAE Systems Maritime to apply intelligent sensors and predictive analytics on engineering assets to facilitate Condition Based Maintenance(CBM). BAE Maritime has maintenance and support responsibility of major fleet and dockyard facilities. Using engineering cases like electric power system and ship engine, the research is to develop systematic method for using remote monitoring systems to reduce maintenance cost.
Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is an approach to deliver the capability to recognise, evaluate, isolate and mitigate faults to enhance the reliability and safety in complex engineering systems. Â Many of the component technology in sensing and monitoring have been developed over the last few decades. The Cranfield IVHM Centre has developed a systematic engineering approach to design IVHM systems according to the failure and maintenance characteristics of the engineering assets, in the context of the concept of operation. Â The combined operations and maintenance analysis allows the full business case for IVHM to be developed. This approach provides the design of the IVHM technical system and the changes in operation and maintenance practice to exploit the information advantage for business advantage.
BAE Systems has been a core partner in the Cranfield IVHM Centre. This research project matures the Cranfield IVHM Design Systems through a number of BAE Maritime use cases in the Portsmouth Naval Base and other ship bases systems. The researcher shall work very closely with BAE engineers throughout the project. The practical skills and experience in this research should greatly enhance the employability of the candidate.
Doctoral Training Centres
This higher research degree is associated with one of Cranfieldâs Doctoral Training Centres, which is funded in part by the Research Councils and industry. A generic core skills training programme is provided for all research students. This is structured as a series of half day or full day events and acts as a social and networking forum to foster and develop Cranfieldâs research student community.
Entry Requirements
Applicant should have a good first degree in engineering with strong analytical ability. Practical engineering training and apprenticeship is a significant advantage. Previous knowledge of reliability engineering, system engineering and maintenance engineering is desirable.
Funding
Supported by BAE Systems Maritime and Cranfield IVHM Centre this studentship will cover the fees and a bursary of up to £17,000 p.a. for 3 years plus UK/EU tuition fees this is due to funding restrictions *
