Postural support seating is often necessary for individuals with severe motor impairments (such as athetoid cerebral palsy), but assessing such seating systems rely heavily on subjective opinion. Motion capture systems offer an objective alternative, but these are expensive and too cumbersome to apply in the field. This studentship will explore the use of force sensors and pressure mapping combined with biomechanical simulation systems (such as AnyBody) to develop objective ways of monitoring seated posture without the need for motion capture.
The project represents a new collaboration in the area of Robotics (Dr Raymond Holt) and Biomechanics (Dr Claire Brockett, Dr Sarah Astill) and will receive industrial support from JCM Seating, part of Sunrise Medical group.
Value: This studentship, which is open to UK, EU and international students, will cover academic fees and a maintenance of £14,254 in 2016/17.Â

Entry requirements:Â Applicants must have a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2.1), or equivalent, in mechanical, mechatronic or medical Engineering.
If English is not the applicant’s first language, they must provide evidence that they meet the University’s minimum English Language requirements.
