An EPSRC funded Industrial Case Studentship Award is available for a suitably qualified candidate to conduct research leading to the award of a PhD degree in the field of civil engineering as part of the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC), Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge (www-smartinfrastructure.eng.cam.ac.uk). The award is sponsored by CH2M Hill-Halcrow (www.halcrow.com) with whom the student will work closely in the research of segmental tunnel behaviour. The main objectives of this project are to assess the actual performance of segmental tunnel behaviour through innovative monitoring (e.g. distributed optical fibre strain measurement and wireless sensor network) and advanced numerical analysis and to find practical implications for design of future segmental tunnels such as Thames Tideway tunnel and Crossrail 2 tunnels.
Eligibility
The candidate should be qualified to at least first degree level with an upper second or first class honours degree in Civil Engineering This Studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend at the EPSRC rate of £13,726 p.a. for 3.5 years, starting on 1st October 2013. Due to the nature of funding the studentship full funding is only available to UK citizens although EU students may be eligible for a fees-only award (no maintenance grant).
