Severe shoulder arthritis, present in a significant proportion of the aging population, can result in severe pain and difficulty in performing daily activities of living. Reverse total shoulder replacement has become accepted as a successful treatment; however, complications such as dislocation and instability remain a problem. The shoulder stability is directly linked to the kinematics and the magnitude of forces involved. Currently, there are no tools to assist medical practitioners/surgeons to measure, estimate or replicate the ideal deltoid (shoulder muscle) tension in reverse shoulder replacements which would reduce the number of complications. The aim of this research is to investigate the kinematics that effects the deltoid tension in shoulder prostheses and to investigate how it can be measured.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates for this fully-funded PhD studentship must demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a PhD in 3 years. All candidates must satisfy the Universityâs minimum doctoral entry criteria for studentships of an honours degree at Upper Second Class (2.1) and/or an appropriate Masters degree. An IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum is essential for candidates for whom English is not their first language.
In addition to satisfying basic entry criteria, BU will look closely at the qualities, skills and background of each candidate and what they can bring to their chosen research project.
