Supervisor: Professor David Procter
Anticipated start date for project: 16 September 2013
Closing date for applications: 31 July 2013
The PhD project will involve the development of metal-free processes for the formation of C-C bonds to aromatic/heteroaromatic rings with substitution of an sp2 C-H bond and either an sp2 or sp3 C-H bond in the other coupling partner. The approach utilizes readily-installed organosulfinyl motifs (S(O)R) as directing groups for metal-free C-H functionalization. Crucially, the new processes will exploit delivery of the nucleophilic partner to the sulfur of the aryl/heteroaryl partner followed by intramolecular delivery to its aromatic ring. Thus, our strategy will use an easy bond-formation (C-S) to facilitate a challenging bond-formation (C-C). For the introduction of this metal-free cross-coupling strategy by our team, see: Eberhart, A. J.; Imbriglio, J. E.; Procter, D. J. Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 5882. Eberhart, A. J.; Procter, D. J. Angew.
