To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering one UK/EU PhD Scholarship, or International Fees Bursary for candidates with a 1st, 2(i), or equivalent, applying for the following project
Closing date 11th January 2013. Studentships will start in September 2013
Supervisors: Dr T. J. Prior and Prof. C. Redshaw, t.prior@hull.ac.uk 01482 466389 Department of Chemistry
This project will involve the synthesis, full characterisation and gas-sorption testing of new families of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are a relatively new class of material with framework structures in which the nodes are comprised of metal ions (or clusters of ions) and the linkers/spacers are molecules called ligands, whose length and directionality can be varied to afford one-, two-, or three-dimensional solid networks as required. Frequently, there is space (pores) between these linking ligands. The gas storage potential of these pores can be controlled by manipulating the structure of the MOF, for example by variation of the metals present, variation of the linkers or by post-synthetic modification. The MACH2 project is directed towards the synthesis and characterisation of MOFs that may function in CO2 capture or H2 storage applications.
The work will involve MOF synthesis by diffusion-controlled crystal growth and hydrothermal techniques, and MOF analysis by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and gas sorption testing. The project is suitable for those with excellent first degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Physics.

A full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the 'home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£13,590 in 2013/14, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.
Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress, but no living expenses.
PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.
Successful applicants will be informed of the award by 29th March 2013.
Scholarships are not only for the smart students. Anyone can get scholarships
