PhD Studentship - National Institute for Health Research School for Public Health Research

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship as part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research (SPHR), to be based with the UCL Department of Primary Care & Population Health and Epidemiology & Public Health (EPH) within the UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Healthcare.

Ageing Well Studentship description This studentship will aim to develop a better understanding of the determinants and pathways leading to the development of age-related changes, for example in sensory and cognitive impairment, depression and falls in later life. A specific focus of the research will be on understanding the role of inflammation in these factors, which form important aspects of healthy ageing. By developing an understanding of the emerging public health issue of ageing, the studentship offers an opportunity to acquire core skills in public health epidemiology. The studentship is an exciting opportunity to conduct epidemiological studies on two large established national on-going cohorts at UCL: The British Regional Heart Study (BRHS) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). The student will be supervised by a multi-disciplinary team of experienced researchers with expertise in epidemiology, public health, primary care and ageing including Dr Kate Walters, Prof. Goya Wannamethee and Dr Sheena Ramsay in PCPH and Dr Livia Carvalho in EPH. For further information please read the additional details on this studentship via the link below.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Kate Walters (k.walters@ucl.ac.uk)  to discuss their interest.

Funding is available for 3 years to cover PhD registration fees (UK/EU), a stipend (at the rate of £16,150 per annum), a Research Training Support Grant of £2000, and research and development costs.

Person specification The studentship is open to those wishing to undertake a Postgraduate Research degree who have already completed appropriate research training (usually through obtaining a good Master’s degree in a relevant subject). Applicants will be expected to have an understanding of epidemiological research methods and medical statistics, and will suit someone with quantitative skills and experience of analysing large datasets.

Eligibility Due to funding restrictions applicants must be UK/EU nationals and have been resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to starting a PhD to be eligible.

Application process Please submit a 2 page CV including details of two academic or professional referees; a covering statement outlining your motivations for training in public health research; and a 1 page outline of your proposed research. Applications should be submitted electronically to Mr Tim Curry t.curry@ucl.ac.uk , with ‘NIHR SPHR Studentship – Ageing Well’  as the subject of the email.

Deadline for applications: 12 noon, 21st October 2013

Interview date:   31st October 2013 (1:30pm-5pm)

Start date:   January 2014
