This PhD studentship commences October 2014 and is a University of Sheffield Collaborative Studentship funded jointly by Immunodiagnostic Systems. The goal of the study is to improve our laboratory approach to diagnosing vitamin D deficiency. At present, we assess vitamin D status by measuring the total level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. This project will be centred around biochemical methods such as immunoassay, tandem mass spectroscopy to assess free levels of this vitamin D metabolite. The project will include work in a biochemistry laboratory and work with our clinical research facility at the Northern General Hospital at which we study research volunteers. This forms a part of the research programme of the Department of Human Metabolism and the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research (www.mellanbycentre.org) and this project will be conducted in collaboration with the diagnostic company, Immunodiagnostic Systems.
Entry Requirements:
Candidates must have a first or upper second class honors degree or significant research experience.
