Academic School: Physics and Astronomy Anticipated start date for project: September 2013 for 4 years Closing date for applications: 12th July 2013 Information about the project: The project will involve investigating novel designs for liquid crystal lenses in which the focus can be changed by external control of the refractive index. We are especially interested in the possibility of polymer-liquid crystal composites and the potential of driving a lens using non-electrical approaches. Candidates should have a significant interest in experimental physics, soft matter physics, optics and photonics. Qualifications applicants should have/expect to receive: The successful candidate will have a first or top upper second class MPhys degree or equivalent. Amount of funding available and eligibility: Four-year, fully funded EPSRC PhD studentship (funded by the EPSRC and Ultravision i.e. the project is a CASE award). Only applicants who satisfy the residency requirement for EPSRC funding will be considered. The position attracts an enhancement of at least £2,000 per annum on top of the standard EPSRC stipend.
