£12500 per annum student bursary (plus fieldwork / laboratory expenses and student fees)
This 3-year PhD project is co-funded by the University of Northampton and the South Downs National Park Authority. It will undertake detailed mapping of erosion and landscape connectivity to determine potential sediment pathways to the River Rother. It will utilize a fingerprinting approach to evaluate the contribution of farm tracks, agricultural fields and sunken lanes to the sediment load of the river and will explore sediment archives (e.g. lake / wetland sediments) to establish changes in the sediment budget over the last ~100 years. It will make recommendations on a range of sediment mitigation options and develop materials for dissemination of research finding to a wide audience.
The project will be supervised by Professor Ian Foster and Dr Naomi Holmes (Northampton) and Dr John Boardman (Oxford) with a starting date as soon as possible. A student with a good honours degree in earth/environmental sciences, geography, geology or a cognate discipline is sought for this position. Due to the significant amount of field work involved applicants must be able to travel effectively and be willing to undertake field work in inclement weather conditions. Further details are available from Professor Ian Foster (Ian.Foster@northampton.ac.uk) to whom any further enquiries should be addressed.
Deadline for applications: 30th September 2013 but the appointment panel reserve the right to accept late applications.
Start date: To be negotiated
