The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly competitive, fully funded scholarship program created to support exceptional, minority high school seniors from low-income households in the United States. Each year, 300 outstanding student leaders are awarded this prestigious scholarship, which covers the full cost of college attendance not already funded by other scholarships or financial aid.
Launched in 2017 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this scholarship reflects the foundation’s enduring commitment to empowering talented minority students by removing financial barriers to higher education.
What the Scholarship Covers
TGS is a last-dollar scholarship, covering all costs that remain after other financial aid and the expected family contribution. This includes:

Eligibility Criteria for The Gates Scholarship 2026
Applicants must:

Be a high school senior
-
Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
-
Belong to at least one of the following ethnic groups:

African American
-
American Indian/Alaska Native*
-
Asian & Pacific Islander American
-
Hispanic American
-
Plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at an accredited, not-for-profit U.S. college or university

Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

*American Indian/Alaska Native applicants must provide proof of tribal enrollment or descent.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The strongest applicants typically demonstrate:

Outstanding academic performance (top 10% of their class)

Proven leadership skills through community service, extracurriculars, or school activities

Resilience and strong personal drive, including emotional maturity, motivation, and perseverance
